Join the Movement as a Land + Water WORKS Ambassador 

Join the Land + Water WORKS Coalition (LWWC) to build the green stormwater infrastructure movement in Detroit. The LWWC is currently seeking neighborhood leaders from across the city of Detroit to apply to serve as Land + Water WORKS Ambassadors. The LWWC will select 10  non-profit organizations to engage 500 community members each, in their neighborhood and service network. 

Land +Water WORKS Ambassadors will:

  • Get paid $5,000  dollars to educate and      engage with 500 Detroiter's in your service network
  • Be eligible to win one of five $5,000 mini-grants to execute community education and engagement efforts on the topic of land and water stewardship under the green stormwater infrastructure umbrella
  • Build  capacity as the local expert in green stormwater infrastructure and its  benefits to Detroit in your service area
  • Learn simple technical skills in green stormwater management that can be used to help improve your service area 
  • Educate community members on the Detroit Water and Sewage Department’s drainage      fee.
  • Strengthen relationships with clients, residents, local businesses, faith-based  organizations, other non-profits and fellow ambassadors 

Interested non-profits are encouraged to attend one of two Land + Water WORKS 2019 Ambassador Program Information Sessions held at the Detroit Future City offices. These sessions are designed to provide potential ambassadors with an overview of the program , what expectations are for program participants and how their important work will help build a green culture shift in Detroit.

While it not mandatory that you attend these sessions, it is strongly encouraged. 

Applicants who are selected to move onto the interview round, must have availability to participate in an interview on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, April 9
  • Wednesday, April 11
  • Thursday, April 12

These interviews will be held at the offices of Detroit Future City with slots available from 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. 

Once hired, Ambassadors must commit to participating in the following activities:

  • Attend a mandatory orientation and training sessions held on Tuesday, April 23  and Wednesday, May 1 from 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Detroit Future City.
  • Attend mandatory monthly city-wide ambassador convening s to receive on-going training and share best practices May – November 2019 on the first Tuesday of each month. These sessions will rotate throughout the city, at sites accessible via public transportation.
  • Submit  brief monthly reports on your outreach and engagement activities along  with supporting documents such as sign-in sheets and event agendas verifying your activity and how many people you interacted with.
  • Participate in monthly check in meetings with program staff designed to provide  ambassadors with the support needed to be successful in their roles. 

ELIGIBILITY

Each non-profit applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Be non-profit serving residents in the City of Detroit
  • Have been in operation as a 501 (c) 3 for at least one year
  • Have at least two full-time employees
  • Must have adequate staff and/or volunteer commitment to design and implement      outreach activities
  • Must have record of demonstrated success in engaging community members and      other stakeholders
  • Must have valid W-9
  • Must provide copy of 2017 audited financials  

The $5,000-dollar stipend will compensate ambassadors for their time as they provide peer-to-peer education related to green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) and the drainage fee rate change. As a LWWC convener Detroit Future City will provide participants wsith assistance developing educational engagement tactics. Ambassadors will receive a toolkit with the materials necessary to complete outreach and engagement activities.

How will Ambassadors Execute Outreach Activities?

The LWWC will provide you the basic guidelines for what we expect from individual ambassadors, but how you achieve these goals is up to you! You will receive comprehensive training, the tools to educate your neighbors on land and water stewardship, green stormwater infrastructure and a template that outlines possible activation's you can replicate. We do encourage ambassadors to be creative and look for other ways to engage their fellow community members in these discussions that are meaningful and effective. 

Peer-to-Peer Outreach and Engagement Educational Practice Examples

Below are examples of peer-to-peer outreach and engagement education practices that can be used by Ambassadors.

  • Host  A Community Workshop – As your organization learns green stormwater infrastructure skills such  as disconnecting a downspout or  installing a rain barrel, share these new skills via a community workshop.      
  • Host  a Small Business Workshop - Work      with local experts to engage local businesses to engage them in  educational conversations around      the DWSD drainage fee, benefits of GSI and opportunities to      take advantage of DWSD Green Credits
  • Door  to Door Canvassing –Engage neighbors, local businesses and others in educational conversations sharing the knowledge you have gained through      the LWWC training sessions
  • Speak  at a community meeting – Present at neighborhood meetings held by  community groups such as block clubs, business associations, school parent groups, neighborhood radio patrols etc.
  • Present  at club meetings – Present at civic, non-profit or private clubs you  belong to such as fraternities, sororities. Masons, Elks, Eastern Stars, Lions, Rotary etc. as the featured speaker for the month
  • Tabling  – Host an information table at community events like school festivals, community resource fairs, at faith-based institutions between services or      local businesses
  • Coffee/Tea  Happy Hour Social - Partner with a local coffee shop to host an  information session on site

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Submit a completed application package in ONE SUBMISSION containing the following REQUIRED items:

  • Completed application form
  • Contact information for two references including name, address, phone number and email

The application package must include the REQUIRED items. Incomplete application packages will not be considered. Detroit Future City, the program administrator may follow up with you at any time to verify application information.

Applicants will receive an email confirmation upon receipt of their application package. All application forms will be kept confidential.

INFORMATION SESSIONS 

DFC will host two information sessions where individuals interested in the program can learn more about the program and participate in on-site Interviews. The sessions will be held at the Detroit Future City office.

Completed applications must be received by Sunday, March 31, 2019 11:59 p.m. Forms may be submitted online or in person. 

Applications may be dropped off at the Detroit Future City offices between the hours of 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday.
